  • Hetzner Online AG Enhances Backbone Performance with Aggregated 100 Gbit Ethernet Connections
  • Gunzenhausen – 1. April 2013

As one of Germany's leading web hosting providers and data center operators, Hetzner Online is now investing in new 100 Gigabit Ethernet technology to expand its high-speed internet backbone.

This is mainly due to the rise in demand for bandwidth by the increasing number of end-users as well as the rapid growth of videos and other traffic-intensive internet applications.

Many data center operators are currently still mainly using 10 Gbit ports where data rates have to be cumbersomely transferred via several parallel connections. Hetzner Online ranks as one of the pioneers in the industry.

In addition to the use of new core router systems with 100 Gbit interfaces from network specialists Juniper Networks Inc., the optical transport network has been adapted to the new technology. New transponders supplied by ADVA Optical Networking Inc. integrate the 100 Gbit/s signal into the optical transport network and transport it over different wavelengths. In this way, the new modules can transmit data at 100 gigabits per second via one single wavelength of fiber optic cable.

These steps will ensure the best performance of all data transferred across the Internet. Allowing for high availability is the backbone's ring topology connecting data center locations in Nuremberg and Falkenstein with Frankfurt as well as the connection to numerous carriers and providers.
