€25,000 IN SEED MONEY FOR NEW FABLAB IN GUNZENHAUSEN

The web hosting company Hetzner Online has provided the new FabLab (Fabrication Laboratory) in Gunzenhausen with €25,000 in financing so that the club can purchase equipment and cover operating costs.

The newly reorganzied non-profit club FabLab Altmühlfranken e.V. founded the public workshop in January 2019. The club brings together hobbyists, people who love hand crafts, gearheads, tech nerds, and people who are generally creative. Their studio has 180 square meters of space for projects, equipment, and high-tech gadgets like 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines. The FabLab will be open up to twice a week and will be free of costs for anyone who is interested or curious and is not a member. Members of the club will have access to the FabLab whenever they are feeling creative. “The light industry workshop located here at Industriestraße 21a wasn’t being used, but it’s perfect for us. Now that we’ve found this spot, we can start making a few renovations in the next few weeks. We hope to officially open our doors at the beginning of next year,” said the club’s managing director, Michael Grüb.

The idea for the FabLab came from two local groups: the government-backed organization “Zukunftsinitiative Altmühlfranken” (Future initiatives for the Altmühlfranken region) and the club “Chaostreff Gunzenhausen” (the local chapter of the Chaos Computer Club). Both groups wanted to create an open space where locals could learn more about machines, technology, gadgets, and other technological devices. In the future, FabLab can host teaching workshops and give people access to high-tech equipment and technologies that they would not normally have at home. It will allow people to make their creative dreams become a reality.

“As a company that values innovation, we are really thrilled at the ideas behind FabLab. We think that this public workshop here in Gunzenhausen has a lot of potential. Visitors will have access to professional equipment and will be able to see their projects come alive. Who knows, maybe they will even invent something new,” said Head of Marketing at Hetzner Online, Christian Fitz.
